Should your dog be found to have fleas on arrival we have the right to refuse our grooming service and will offer another appointment to be arranged after the dog has been treated and the coat no longer shows any sign of infestation.

Should your dog be found to have fleas during the grooming session the groomer will contact you immediately to inform you and may offer to provide a flea bath service for an additional charge if appropriate.

We will not allow female dogs which appear to be in season into our groom room for their own.
It is the responsibility of the owner to inform us in advance should their dog been in season.
The groomer should be notified of any behavioural issues (e.g. anxiety, aggression) in advance of the dogs appointment to ensure appropriate advice and care is provided in the interest of the dogs well-being.

Should your dogs coat be matted on arrival for appointment, the groomer will assess the coat condition and advise if the coat can b e de-matted. The de-matting service will incur an extra charge of £15 per 30 mins required.

It is our policy that no dog will be subjected to stress or discomfort when in our care in accordance with The Animal and Welfare Act 2007

In cases of extreme coat matting where the coat cannot be de-matted and the welfare of the dog is at risk, the groomer may advise that the coat should be shaved off. If the client agrees to their dogs coat being shaved off an information sheet will be provided and an agreement form must be signed by the client. In this instance we also have the right to refuse our grooming service. Please read our shave off policy form for more details.

When a dog is presented to us in a severely matted condition it is our policy to recommend to shave/clip the whole coat using electric clippers with a 7f blade (3.5mm approx.).

We ONLY groom HUMANELY and follow the Animal Welfare Act 2006 which states ...’ the duty of care (the need to provide for an animal’s welfare) applies to animals for which a person is responsible.

To de-matt a severely matted coat can often cause the dog tremendous stress and discomfort, leaving a very thinned and damaged coat. The de-matting process can often leaving the dog traumatised and afraid of grooming for the rest of its life. We consider shaving the coat off as an act of kindness.
Once the coat is removed, the skin can be left red, sore and itchy from the lack of air and the accumulation of dirt. Occasionally there will be sores or infection which may need veterinary treatment. Dogs tend to scratch and rub their skin after shaving, this is normal, however some dogs can ‘over scratch’ and this can lead to broken skin. If in doubt seek advice from your vet.

A dog will feel different after shaving. He/she may feel lighter, off balance, they will feel the rain and wind on their skin; their tail may start to annoy them. In summer there is a risk of sunburn. Your dog’s coat will feel similar to suede and depending on the coat colour your dog may look quite pink and pigmentation may be visible which can look like bruising.

Many dogs will not cope well with the irritation caused and the discomfort felt when the coat is shaved, especially if the matted areas around the dogs ‘hygiene’ areas has had to be shaved very close. Your dog may start to spin round towards its rear end to investigate. There may be a heightened awareness of any sensations or underlying anal gland infection. Some dogs will simply not want to walk or may ‘slam’ there back end down when the sensation annoys them. This extreme reaction can lead to problems such as pulled lumbar muscles or swelling at the dog’s rear end. If you suspect that your dog is unwell, you should seek veterinary advice.

Your response to any of your dog’s ‘new behaviours’, can play a huge part in how your dog copes with this ‘new’ feeling. Some dogs will appear to be depressed and sulk for days (this behaviour should not be reinforced) others will prance like spring lambs and feel fantastic because they have freedom of movement once more.

If you have concerns before or after the shaving process, please feel free to speak to one of our groomers or contact your vet for more advice.

Regardless of how your dog looks or acts, he will be very much healthier. We are here to help you maintain your dog’s coat and keep your pet healthy. Now is a great time to instil a new ‘home grooming’ regime. Consider having your dog professionally groomed more regularly. Let us help by keeping your dog in a more ‘manageable’ trim that suits your (and your dog’s) lifestyle.
